“You are a copywriter I really admire. You have done a great job of carving out an under served niche that you are uniquely qualified to dominate.”
Bob Bly, Online/Direct Response/B-to-B Copywriter and Author
“John Gilger has done several copywriting projects for me including some long sales letters. I've used a number of big-name direct-response writers over the years including Gary Halbert, Dan Kennedy, and Jay Abraham, and I consider John to be in their league. He's easy to work with, very creative, reasonably priced and gets the job done on time. I highly recommend him.”
Rick Neiswonger, Asset Protection Group, Inc.
“These auto responder e-mails are great! Nice work. I really like the direction you went with them. Thanks so much for working hard to get these right.”
Janaya Rampton, Prosper Media, Inc.
“I'm laughing out loud. You're nailing it! This is EXACTLY what I wanted! Keep up the great work!”
Peter Winters, Better Life Marketing, Inc.
Some folks are curious about what else I've done in my life and what kind of experience I can bring to their project.
Ok, that’s fair enough. If you’re going to do business with someone, you ought to know something about him as a person. So, without further ado...
As the son of a fourth-generation English teacher, I guess a love of language, reading, and writing must have been in my mother’s milk. Playing with words is still a favorite pastime, whether it is a crossword puzzle, Scrabble, or a writing project, I like words.
I have also been intrigued with sales and persuasion. My first foray into the world of sales was when I was eight or nine years old. I wanted a gas-powered model airplane, so I answered an ad in Boy’s Life magazine that offered my airplane if I could sell a certain number of greeting cards. Selling a few to my Mom, aunts, and Grandma weren’t too bad, but do you know how scary it is to knock on the next-door neighbor’s door? It got worse the further from home that I went.
I had a variety of part-time sales jobs — encyclopedias, pots and pans, even Tupperware. About the time I retired from the Navy, I got a chance to sell life insurance and mutual funds with a great sales trainer, Art Williams. I also found out that I could write sales materials that worked better in my local market than the stuff from the home office.
I spent 20 years in the Navy’s submarine service in the nuclear engineering department of several submarines, in the nuclear repair department of a couple of submarine tenders, and the submarine base at Bangor, Washington. In the Navy, I learned self-discipline and developed the ability to keep a clear head in crises.
I still use these skills today in my copywriting business. I always meet my commitments, even on the most complex writing projects, and I know how to find the right solution to chaotic problems.
Early in my Navy career, my boss discovered that not only could I type and write, I could even spell correctly. That was rare for an engineer! Throughout the rest of my career, writing was a part of it — operation procedures, policy notes, work procedures, etc.
While in the Navy, two educational experiences changed the direction of my life. I earned my Bachelor of Business Administration degree at National University’s night school and the Navy sent me through recruiter training.
Selling the Navy at that time was tough. However, the training we received on sales techniques, psychology, and persuasion was excellent. These insights are an ingrained part of my marketing and copywriting skill set.
Learning to “sell” the Navy and persuade sailors to re-enlist taught me that it is easier to sell almost anything else. However, I did successfully fulfill my assignments — just as I'll fulfill your assignments.
My finance and accounting classes were enjoyable, but the marketing class opened my eyes to new possibilities. I enjoyed the sales process and the fun of marketing.
When I learned that I could sell by writing letters, case studies, or reports, I knew I had finally found my niche in life. I've never found more enjoyment in anything else. When I write for you, you get a professional copywriter with a wide and eclectic background — and a passion for writing about your product or service.
I have an insatiable curiosity about everything. Learning new facts and skills s probably my main hobby – at least that is easier than listing everything that I am interested in or enjoy doing.
I have written with concise clarity about various topics such as:
And more…
I do get excited about learning about your product and describing all the interesting benefits it offers people. Research is often the most exciting part of a writing project!
I like to dig into your product and find out everything I can about it and about your target market, then get outside the box to write a letter telling the world about all of its cool benefits.
The very best part of my writing business is hearing about my clients’ success with their mailings!
Recapping my education — I graduated near the top of my class in Naval Nuclear Power School (an intense engineering program), I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Business Admin from National University in San Diego, and I graduated from the College of Financial Planning in Denver as a Certified Financial Planner.
There you have it. My history in a nutshell.
