Hi, I’m John.
If you’ve made it to this page, there’s no doubt we share a love of magnetic copywriting, compelling web content, and laser-focused editing – all directed toward a single goal—helping you run rings around the competition.
But the topic is “About Me”, so before I bore you with a bunch of bragging about how marvelous I am as a writer, I’ll share a brief background sketch about me. You can skip it if you want to.
I started life in a small farm town in the mountains of Southern Utah; the son of a cabinet maker and an English teacher. I’ve always been a voracious reader to whom writing came easily.
At the age of eight, the sales bug sank its teeth deep into my soul. I wanted one of those gas-powered airplanes attached to a string that you flew around in a circle. It cost more than my parents could afford, but an ad on the back of a Boy’s Life magazine promised me I could have my airplane if I sold a bunch of All Occasion cards.
I quickly discovered the pain and fear of rejection.
You have to picture this in your mind: A small 8-year old boy knocking on a neighbor’s door and this huge (at least 5’ 8” tall) irritated woman answering the door with flour up to her elbows. She didn’t appreciate my stammering pitch interrupting her baking and made her point abundantly clear.
I did get over it… eventually.
After high school I dodged the Viet Nam draft by joining the Navy. It was a blast. I spent the next 20 years as a nuclear engineering mechanic in the Submarine Service as we hunted “Red Whales” (Soviet submarines) all over the Northern Hemisphere. When on shore duty, I worked part-time in sales. Of course, I honed my ability to spin yarns and tell tall tales (AKA “Sea Stories”) in the navy’s Recruiter School.
About the time I retired from the Navy in ‘91, I started selling financial services. The brochures and promotional materials were dull as dishwater. I started looking around to find out what was so hard about writing a decent, persuasive marketing promotion. My search led me to AWAI (American Writers & Artists, Inc.) and the world of direct response copywriting.
Taking a dive down that rabbit hole was heaven on earth – writing and sales all rolled together in a magical, money-making adventure. Over the years, I discovered, and learned from, the heroes of this world that I never knew existed.
That more or less brings us to where we are now.
I’m now a seasoned copywriter and fan of direct response copy. The engineer in me loves solving puzzles and problems. The sales bug inside me loves working with people and teaching them about new things. My inner writer and teller-of-sea-stories likes to wrap up the solution and explanation in an interesting story for your email list, website, or blog.
