John Gilger, Direct Response Copywriting

If we were chatting over lunch or in your office, you’d probably have some questions to ask. Let me answer the most common ones here.

“What Are Your Writing Qualifications?”

Over the years I have had an opportunity to write about an interesting assortment of topics.

As a freelancer, I have written recruiting ads and sales materials for A.L. Williams (now Primerica Financial Services) as well as the variety of marketing materials used in the real estate business, both direct response and display ads. Also, I’ve written direct mail letters for nutritional supplements. And, I have had the pleasure of writing and selling magazine articles on personal financial planning and the Internet.

Before venturing out on my own as a freelance writer, I wrote and edited engineering and technical materials for the U.S. Navy, the Department of Energy, and the gaming resort industry.

I have also taught business writing courses for several of the companies I worked with.

“Do You Have a Business or Technical Background?”

I have a Business degree from National University in San Diego and I graduated from the College of Financial Planning in Denver as a Certified Financial Planner.

I am also a graduate of the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power School and the associated continuing engineering training for twenty years. During this time, I taught classes, developed training materials, and supervised the engineering departmental training program (not all at once, of course).

Most important to you, I am a direct-response copy specialist.

After years of writing, I found my niche writing direct-response copy. Each new assignment is an exciting challenge. I get to learn new things about your product and synthesize that with other bits and pieces of knowledge picked up over the years. Then I get to put all that together in a way that will persuade corporate executives, entrepreneurs, engineers, managers, purchasing agents, or just plain folks that your product is the most desirable gizmo they have seen in a long time and that their life just wouldn’t be complete without the benefits it will bring to them.

“What Kinds of Assignments Do you Accept?”

I cover the full range of your writing needs. Most of my work is writing direct mail and web-site copy. The rest is a wide assortment of communication materials and documentation including online help for software, ads, slide presentations, brochures, articles, newsletters, product guides, manuals, speeches, and white papers.

My specialty is clear, concise, persuasive copy that is easily understood and motivates the reader to respond — even if the subject is complex and technical.

I have a bit of knowledge about a great many topics. This makes it easy for me to quickly grasp new concepts and problems. I can sit down with management, engineers, sales people, or regular workers and speak their language.

“What Does It Cost to Hire You For My Project?”

Several variables go into pricing a project. One of the biggest variables is the amount of research that I need to do. If you provide a lot of material, I don’t need to spend as much time finding it myself and the cost is lower. When I quote a price on a project, that is all you pay.

“What About Revisions?”

Most clients are pleased with my copy when they receive it. However, if you are not 100% satisfied, I will rewrite it to meet your specific guidelines…at my own expense.

Revisions and rewriting are part of the normal writing process. Just tell me what you want changed and I will take care of it as a PRIORTY.

There is NO CHARGE for revisions. They are included in the flat fee we’ve agreed to on the assignment provided that they are requested within thirty days of your receipt of the copy and they are not based on a change in the scope of the assignment.

“How Long Will It Take You to Write My Copy?”

A great deal depends on the size of the project and the amount of research that I must do. Ideally, for an “average” project, I like to have 2 - 3 weeks to write and fine tune your copy. I also realize that sometimes you don’t have that long.

If the job is a rush, let me know. If I can meet that deadline and I accept your assignment, the copy will be on your desk by the deadline. I guarantee it. The copy will be done right.

“How Do I Order From You?”

Bringing me on to your team is easy.

First, fill in this form and send it to me to tell me what you’re selling and who you are selling it to. Send me your brochure, previous sales letter, or any other literature that will give me the background information I need to write your copy. Don’t worry about organizing it. I’ll do that. When I have questions, I’ll pick up the phone and ask.

I'll send you a quote by e-mail or fax for your approval.

When you give me the go-ahead, I’ll write the assignment for you and deliver it on or before your deadline. Guaranteed.

So…why not give me a try on your next sales letter, direct mail package, post card campaign, ad, brochure, or press release? I promise you will be delighted with the results.
